A 2 DAY OPENWATER SWIM SKILLS WORKSHOP The Openwater Swim Lab is a two-day workshop for swimmers who want to become more confident, skilled and self-reliant in open water. The Lab combines classroom learning, practical open-water skills and a longer continuous swim, allowing participants to understand techniques, practise them and then apply them in a real open-water environment. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? Suitable for new and regular open-water swimmers, triathletes, and swimmers preparing for longer-distance swims or swimathons. Participants must have prior open-water swimming experience and should have completed at least 250 metres continuously in open water, with or without a tow float. DAY 1 — LEARN THE OPENWATER Build confidence. Develop skills. Understand the water. Day 1 begins with a classroom session on open-water techniques, covering safety, sighting & navigation, drafting, buoy turns, starts & group swimming, pacing & race strategies, floating & self-management, and nutrition & hydration. This will be followed by a 1 to 1.5-hour in-water skills session to practise these techniques in a real open-water environment, including feeding and hydration while swimming. DAY 2 — TAKE ON THE OPENWATER Put everything you’ve learnt into practice. Day 2 begins with a pre-swim briefing covering pacing, navigation, drafting, nutrition & hydration, fatigue management and self-management. Participants will then take on a 2-hour continuous open-water swim, applying the skills learnt on Day 1, including planned feeding and hydration. This is not a race or a test of maximum distance. The objective is to learn how to manage yourself confidently and effectively during a longer open-water swim. SAFETY & SWIMMER SUPPORT The in-water sessions will be conducted on a defined swim course with kayak and safety support, along with experienced members of the Openwater Swim TRIbe team. Tow floats are mandatory. Participants are expected to bring their own. If you don't have one and require a tow float from us, please indicate this through the separate Tow Float Requirement Form. Provided in a separate link within the event details. Swimmers may be grouped according to swimming ability and pace. Please bring the nutrition and hydration products you are familiar with and intend to use during the practical and longer swim sessions. MEALS & ACCOMMODATION Day 1: Lunch & Dinner Day 2: Breakfast 🏠 Shared overnight accommodation is included. Please bring your personal toiletries and other requirements for the overnight stay.
