Kolkata has a proud long-distance running heritage, with the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K among India's oldest and most prestigious road races. The city's runners train along the Maidan, Rabindra Sarobar, and the Victoria Memorial grounds — some of the most atmospheric running routes in India. Runners are active across Salt Lake, Park Street, Ballygunge, Alipore, and New Town, with the race calendar concentrated in November through February before the Bengal heat arrives. Kolkata supports road distances from 5K to 25K strongly, with a dedicated long-distance road racing culture that predates the modern Indian running boom.
